The City of Westminster is seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Mechanic with strong experience in pumps, motors, mechanical systems, and waterworks operations.

This role is ideal for a hands-on professional who thrives in troubleshooting complex equipment, takes initiative in identifying improvements, and performs confidently under emergencies or high-alert conditions.

Key Qualifications:

  • Can perform mechanical, plumbing, and electrical repairs, replacements, and installations for pumps, motors, well equipment, and water treatment plant equipment.
  • Able to remove and reinstall pumps and motors for overhaul and coordinate major repairs.
  • Can diagnose malfunctions using critical thinking and procedural troubleshooting; proactively recommend corrective actions and operational improvements.
  • Knowledgeable in industrial automation systems, advanced maintenance techniques, and programming/controls (Programmable Logic Computers); remains current through training and professional development.
  • Keeps supervisors informed of unusual conditions, equipment failures, and optimization opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment independently.
  • Ability to remain calm, alert, and decisive under pressure.
  • Assists with water sampling and support plant operations as needed.

Education and Certification Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 3 years of mechanical and electrical experience in an industrial or waterworks setting (pump and industrial automation experience strongly preferred).
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to safety.
  • Maryland Class IV Water Treatment Certification (Environmental Article Title 12 & COMAR 26.06.01) required (or willingness to obtain immediately upon hire).
  • Valid Class B CDL with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements or ability to obtain within one year (training provided)
    OR 
  • Valid Class A CDL with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements or ability to obtain within one year (training provided)
  • Additional certifications (Flagger, Sampler, First Aid/CPR) required or obtainable after hire.

Work Environment

The primary work hours are 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday; however, this role requires availability for on-call during emergencies, inclement weather, and extended-duty situations.

This position involves heavy physical work (up to 100 lbs.), outdoor exposure in all weather conditions, and working around mechanical equipment and treatment chemicals. Personal protective equipment is required.
