System Automation & AI Apprentice

System Automation & AI Apprentice

Information Technology (IT)

Department: Information Technology / Engineering

Reports To: Lead Automation Engineer

Role Overview

Are you a problem-solver who hates doing the same task twice? We are looking for a System Automation & AI Apprentice to join our technical operations team. This is an entry-level role designed for someone with a foundational understanding of scripting and systems who is eager to transition into a professional DevOps or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) career.

As an apprentice, you won’t just be watching from the sidelines. You will work directly with senior engineers to build, maintain, and troubleshoot the "digital plumbing" that keeps our business running. You’ll learn how to replace manual, error-prone processes with elegant, automated code.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Shadow & Learn: Work closely with senior mentors to understand infrastructure design, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud environments.
  • Scripting & Tooling: Write and maintain basic scripts (Python, Bash, or PowerShell) to automate routine system tasks.
  • Monitoring & Alerting: Assist in configuring monitoring tools to ensure system health and respond to low-level automated alerts.
  • Documentation: Maintain clear "Runbooks" and technical documentation so the team understands how your automated workflows function.
  • Deployment Support: Help manage code deployments and environment updates using version control systems like Git.
  • Troubleshooting: Participate in root-cause analysis to figure out why an automated process failed and how to prevent it from happening again.

Qualifications & Skills

The "Must-Haves":

  • Foundational Coding: Willingness to become proficiency in at least one language (Python is preferred, but we’re open to Java, Ruby, or Go).
  • OS Literacy: Comfort working within a Linux/Unix terminal or Windows PowerShell.
  • The "Automation Mindset": An interest with efficiency and a natural curiosity about how complex systems fit together.
  • Communication: The ability to explain technical problems in simple terms.

The "Nice-to-Haves":

  • Familiarity with Cloud providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Understanding of "Infrastructure as Code" concepts (Terraform, Ansible, or Chef).
  • Basic knowledge of Docker or containerization.

What We Offer

  • Structured Mentorship: Dedicated 1-on-1 time with industry experts.
  • Growth Path: A clear roadmap to transition into a Junior Systems/DevOps Engineer role within [12-18] months.
  • Tech Allowance: Budget for certifications (AWS, CKA, etc.) and continuous learning.
  • Collaborative Culture: A "fail-fast" environment where mistakes are treated as learning opportunities.
